Windsurfing: Avon beach Wind Direction: sw? Wind Stength: 15 Surf / Sea State: chop to a huge rolling swell Air Temperature: 19 Sea Temperature: 16 Weather: cloudy Max Speed: 23.2 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 29.9 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
After a long walk in the New Forest getting covered in mud we packed up the
van and headed for Mudeford again, but as yesterday we could'nt park at the
Harbour which was just as well as the tide was still abit low.We then found
a carpark just around the corner from Mudeford which we discovered is Avon
beach. We were lucky to get a front row parking spot, had lunch and watched
as there were several windsurfers and kiters out even though the wind was
cross off from the harbour making sail choice difficult. With most out on
6/7m sails I rigged 7.5 on the xantos.After a wobbly 100m the wind
increased and 7.5 was fine, although there were some wave sailers out with
small boards and sails but that looked like hard work to me and I like to
be powered up!!! I started off with a beat up to Hengistbury Head I landed
here walked past the most expensive beachhuts in the country - apparentely
to check the flat water blasting potential of the harbour but the
windsurfers in the harbour were not going so I decided against trying
there. So back out to the open sea and reaching straight toward The Needles,
so I thought why not lets live dangerously and sail to the Needles !!!! So
after 8 miles of mega reaching in huge ocean swells taking care not to sail
too fast I made it !!!(as I did not want to break anything) gybed at the
red bouy (I mean fell in and waterstarted) and started the return, trouble
is I sailed too broad back and ended up at Highcliff, then had to beat back
to Avon beach, but I got back alive without breaking anything which is a
result !!!! I then pack up and go for along walk with Mag to Highcliff the
perfect end to a brilliant long weekend away and it only took us three and
a half hours to get home !!!! ( I would love to do the Guy Cribb sail from
Bournemouth to Brigthon as it is a great area to sail but I don't my hands
and knees are up to the 100 mile trip !!! )
